THE SCOREBOARD PRINCIPLE
Shifting Your Focus
Hello dear reader,
I hope that this letter meets you well. I probably won’t bother going through the routine of apologizing for my inconsistence on this space. I really look forward to doing better but I cannot promise much at the moment.
In this mail, I want to share with you on something I believe is a powerful truth that can change your life forever. It is what I have learnt as the Scoreboard principle. This is a concept derived by Leadership and Corporate Management experts. And the idea behind this principle is derived from a Basketball game where it is common knowledge that for the team that seems to be losing to change the narrative of the game, it has to take its eyes off the scoreboard that reveal the current state of things as it concerns the ongoing game and shift its attention to the game.
The idea is that no one changes the scores by looking at the scores.
I like to believe that this is a very powerful principle in growth, personal development, dealing with habits, leadership ( both of yourself and other people) and becoming a better you.
That one of the ways to deal with that seemingly weakness or weight both individually and corporately is sometimes by taking your attention of that thing and looking unto something more expedient.
This principle also has a root in scriptures. In the book of John Chapter 3, Jesus is having a conversation with a Jewish rabbi by the name Nicodemus on matters as it pertains to eternal life and in doing so, he draws an illustration from an occurrence when the Children of Israel were in the wilderness . He says in John 3: 14 “ Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness , so the Son of Man must be lifted up” pointing Nicodemus’ attention to the situation in the book of Numbers Chapter 21 where because of their sins, the children of Israel were being bitten by snakes and of all the many ways to cure them of their affliction, God instructs Moses to set up a brazen serpent upon a pole and everyone that looks upon it will be healed. The normal thing for an injured person to do is to look at the area where the injury has been inflicted. However rather than that, the Lord asks them to shift their attention from their present predicaments to something higher. Jesus employs the same principle as says that in likewise manner, the Son of man will be lifted up and everyone who looks upon him will be saved. Believing in Jesus is a way of looking up to him, shifting our attention from our struggles and sins to the one who can save us.
The idea I am trying to pass across to you is that maybe the reason why it seems like that pain, that hurt, that weakness, that sickness, that struggle, that inadequacy has so much on you is because you have given it so much attention.
It is also important to note that what you fix your gaze on magnifies itself before you.
A passage of scripture I love so much is JUDE 1: 24 , “ Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great Joy.” Maybe the reason you have been falling is because your attention has been on how many times you have fallen. How about shifting your attention from your fall to the one who can keep you from falling ?
Stop Sulking and Start doing !
If you are not prepared for an exam you are going to be having in a few hours, the only way to change the narrative is to forget about how unprepared you are and actually start preparing.
This is a powerful truth for salvation, growth and your everyday life and has its root in scriptures and experience.
So while you are at it, the best way to change that unpleasant situation in your life is to shift your focus from that situation and fix your attention on what can change that situation. It is only then that you can STAY LIMITLESS !
